The great lure of street photography is the potential to capture the “decisive moment” but that has never really been my objective. I’ve never romanticized street life, my personal and familial history provides me with a completely different perspective on the medium. I have very little interest in capturing spectacle, my gaze is focused on examining the everyday dynamic.
My journey into street photography begins where my landscape work (www.kwasiboydbouldin.com) ends, adding an element to my portfolio that I was uninterested in seriously pursuing until earlier this year. I approach it from a documentary perspective, to capture some of what is real and authentic about life in Los Angeles to counteract the many misconceptions about my hometown. The street scenes increase resolution of the overall portrait, illuminating the unseen relationship between the changing urban landscape and the unseen individual interactions that give it life.
